Sanitary Sewer Overflow Notification and Reporting


This page is for public notification of any Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) events that occur within the City under the guidelines of 314 CMR 16.04 and 16.06.

SSO events will be posted here within the next business day after the discovery of an event. These events are also reported to MassDEP per state guidelines.

A Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) event has occurred in the City of Beverly. Wastewater overflows started at approximately 9:00 AM  on  8/21/2023 at a manhole located at 451 Essex St. This overflow likely consisted of untreated sewage. The estimated approximate volume and flow rate of the SSO event is 1500 total gallons at  10  gallons per minute. The manhole where the SSO is occurring is owned and maintained by the City of Beverly. This overflow could potentially impact the surrounding brook. The Overflow stopped at approximately 11:30AM on 8/21/23. It is advised that you avoid contact with this water body for a minimum of 48 hours after the discharge or overflow ceases due to the increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants unless otherwise informed by the City of Beverly Board of Health.
